Police Shoulders

During one of my duties this weekend, I noticed a lonely police man standing at the back of a crowd.
This was no normal policeman...
He had white rank slides on his shoulder. He also had a white patch on his right shoulder, on the front of his vest, and a white patch on his back, with what I presumed to be a call sign on.
What does all this white-ness mean?
Thoughts were crowd control/riot officer, drugs or bomb squad?
If anyone knows please post on here, google has failed me again :(

I have spoken to 2 Essex policemen and neither recognise the 'white' rank. It must be a Pompeyshire invention or was he an imposter?...

See, I read that and think "Well, a really, *really* big bird could have been flying overhead..."

OK so I haven't looked at your blog for ages and was just catching up on posts yesterday...

Happened to be seeing Paul yesterday evening and so I asked him (as I thought he should be in the know being a policeman and all) and he says it's to show a Public Order trained Sergeant.

So there we are!
